DULIAJAN, May 20: A scuffle broke out at the petrol pump of BN Singh in Duliajan, Dibrugarh district, on May 17, leading to the arrest of former General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Shankarjyoti Baruah. His arrest, during which he was reportedly handcuffed, has sparked controversy, with allegations that the police action violated a directive of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and constituted a breach of human rights.
L Ratan Singh, General Secretary of the International Human Rights Council (Tinsukia District Committee), strongly condemned the incident and called upon Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Director General of Police Harmeet Singh to immediately arrest the concerned police officer and initiate a departmental inquiry.
“The law is equal for all in India. Disobeying a directive of the Supreme Court is a serious offense. Whether the crime is committed by a citizen or by the police, everyone must be treated equally,” Singh said in a statement.
He further appealed to the Gauhati High Court to take suo motu cognizance of the matter and ensure strict action against such alleged police misconduct. The International Human Rights Council has urged judicial and administrative authorities to remain vigilant against violations of fundamental rights.
