JORHAT, May 31: Newly appointed Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, Jorhat MP, and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Gaurav Gogoi, received a rousing welcome from party workers and supporters upon his arrival in his constituency on Saturday.
Gogoi was greeted with loud chants of “Gaurav Gogoi Zindabad” as enthusiastic crowds lined the streets, waving Congress flags and stopping his cavalcade to felicitate him with traditional phulam gamosas and jaapis.
His arrival at the airport was marked by scenes of celebration, as party cadres, well-wishers, and local residents turned out in large numbers to welcome him.
Upon reaching Jorhat, Gogoi first visited his ancestral home at Nazir Ali, where he sought blessings from elders, offered prayers, and paid homage to his late father, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
A large poster of a smiling Tarun Gogoi adorned the family residence, evoking memories of his enduring legacy.
In a brief address, Gaurav Gogoi said he had been advised to first take charge at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, but he chose to visit Jorhat first due to his deep emotional connection with the place.
“Jorhat is where my father began his social and political journey. This is home for me,” he said, recalling his roots in Rangajan, Titabar, and his residence in Ward No 10.
He expressed gratitude to the people of Jorhat for their unwavering love and support, especially during the recent Lok Sabha elections, and reiterated his commitment to the constituency.
Gogoi also indicated that the Congress would soon begin formulating its strategy for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, scheduled for 2026.
“The people of Assam have high hopes from the Congress, and we will work towards fulfilling those expectations,” he stated.
The APCC president was accompanied by Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed and Bhaskar Baruah, Jorhat District Congress president Putul Buragohain, and several representatives from the NSUI, Youth Congress, and other district-level party units.
