GUWAHATI, Sept 25: The Lokpriya Gopinath Bardoloi Domestic Cargo Terminal in Assam has seen a substantial increase in cargo handling in the last three months. The terminal dealt with a total of about 1000 metric tonnes of inbound and outbound cargo during this period, including 146 tons in June, 411 tons in July, and 426 tons in August.
The cargo terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for handling general and valuable cargo, dangerous goods (DGR), temperature-sensitive cargo like perishables, life-saving drugs, human remains, postal mails, couriers, and various other commodities. It plays a vital role in transporting goods from Assam and the North East to various parts of the country.
Currently covering an area of 550 square meters, there are plans to develop an international cargo terminal building in the near future. The Chief Airport Officer emphasized the untapped potential of perishable air cargo in Assam and the Northeast. The region produces unique products like Bhut Jalakia, pineapple, ginger, kazinemu, and other vegetables, which have global appeal. The infrastructure is being developed to ensure that these products can reach international markets within 24 hours, contributing to economic prosperity in the region.
This development highlights the growing importance of air cargo in facilitating trade and connecting regional products to a wider consumer base.
