GUWAHATI, July 18: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a swipe at the opposition parties that formed a coalition named the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) on Tuesday. Sarma stated that the country was named India by the British during colonial rule, and the focus should be on freeing the nation from the “colonial legacies”.
Sarma’s comment comes in response to the coalition formed by 26 opposition parties to collectively challenge the ruling NDA.
Highlighting the civilizational conflict between India and Bharat, Sarma emphasised the need to break free from colonial influences. He tweeted, “Our civilizational conflict is pivoted around India and Bharat. The British named our country India. We must strive to free ourselves from colonial legacies.”
Asserting that their predecessors fought for Bharat, Sarma reiterated their commitment to working for the betterment of the country. He concluded his statement by saying, “BJP for BHARAT,” signifying the party’s focus on the nation.
The opposition bloc, comprising 26 parties, announced its formation during a press conference in Bengaluru. (With inputs from PTI)
