Margherita, June 27: On Tuesday, forest department officials conducted a raid in the 2 number Hanjuwara area of Tirap Reserve Forest, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Lekhapani Forest Range Office in Digboi Forest Division, resulting in the seizure of illegal timber. The raid led to the confiscation of approximately 300 CFT (cubic feet) of smuggled timber from the area. The seized timber is estimated to have a value of Rs 2 lakh. Prafulla Gogoi, a staff member of the Lekhapani Forest Range Office, stated that the seizure was made during a patrolling duty under the guidance of newly appointed Lekhapani Forest Range Officer, Parasmita Neog.
“While the felled trees cannot be recovered, the Assam government’s forest department will generate revenue from the seized timber. An inquiry will be conducted to identify and take action against those involved in the illegal timber smuggling in the 2 number Hanjuwara area of Tirap Reserve Forest,” added Prafulla Gogoi.
