In a concerted effort to protect wildlife, including rare and endangered species, the Northeast Frontier Railway (N. F. Railway) has initiated a crucial project aimed at safeguarding the Hoolock Gibbon in Assam. The railway line traversing the Gibbon Sanctuary in Jorhat district, which is a critical habitat for the arboreal Hoolock Gibbon, has long posed a significant threat to these animals.

Recognizing the urgency, N. F. Railway, in collaboration with the Assam State Forest Department, the Wildlife Institute of India, and other stakeholders, is set to install canopy bridges within the sanctuary to mitigate this risk. These measures are designed to ensure the safe passage of the gibbons across the railway tracks that cut through their habitat

Details of the Initiative

Canopy Bridges Installation:
The installation of canopy bridges will occur at several strategic points within the sanctuary, facilitating the movement of the gibbons and other arboreal species across the railway tracks. The Assam State Forest Department, having submitted the designs and cost estimates prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India, will spearhead the installation process.

Financial Commitment:
In a show of financial support, N. F. Railway deposited the necessary funds for the installation in February 2024. This financial backing ensures that the project can proceed without delay.

Safety Measures:
To enhance safety, the ends and knots of the canopy bridges will be secured using high-grade fastening materials and techniques. Additionally, safety nets will be installed beneath the main twin-rope bridges to catch any animals that might accidentally fall.

Long-Term Design:
In a bid to integrate the artificial structures with the natural environment, the design incorporates elements such as lianas and creepers that will gradually grow over the rope bridges. This hybrid approach aims to create a semi-artificial structure that seamlessly blends with the natural surroundings over time.

This initiative by the Indian Railways marks a significant step towards the conservation of the Hoolock Gibbon and demonstrates a commitment to preserving the biodiversity within Assam’s precious ecosystems.
