JORHAT, Aug 27: The state minister for Labour Welfare, Sanjay Kishan, demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of workers by handing over a cheque of Rs 628,833 to the family members of Bhaskar Mahanti from Tyroon Tea Estate, Titabar. Bhaskar Mahanti had suffered a grievous injury to his right leg in a factory accident on August 22, which ultimately led to amputation. The compensation amount was paid by Tyroon Tea Company in accordance with the Employees Compensation Act, under the direction of the assistant labour commissioner (ALC), Jorhat, Jagat Jibon Dutta.
Minister Kishan, after visiting Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) to inquire about Mahanti’s condition, addressed the media and shared his concerns. He revealed that the amputation surgery was successful, although Mahanti was facing some complications, which the medical team was actively addressing. Kishan also mentioned that the expenses for Mahanti’s treatment and an attendant were being covered by the tea garden authorities.
Responding to queries, minister Kishan indicated that if Mahanti was incapable of working due to his condition, a family member would be given an opportunity to take his place. He highlighted the government’s efforts to prevent accidents in tea factories, mentioning the formation of task forces under the Labour department in various districts. These task forces, comprising officials, factory inspectors, representatives from Assam Tea Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, medical inspector of Plantations, and Employees State Insurance Corporation, are responsible for inspecting safety measures and submitting compliance reports to the government.
Kishan stressed the importance of safety in tea factories and revealed that a recent inspection carried out by the task force at Tyroon Tea Estate had identified certain safety measures lacking. The garden was directed to implement these safety measures promptly.
