JORHAT, July 12: Upor Gorumora village has been gripped with fear for the past 15 days as a leopard has been wreaking havoc in the area, attacking villagers and killing several cattle. The latest incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when Jatin Bora, a young man who went to retrieve his buffalos from grazing, was attacked by the elusive big cat hiding in the nearby bushes.
Jatin’s screams alerted his father, Nandeswar Bora, and other villagers who rushed to his aid. They managed to drive away the leopard and rescue Jatin, who sustained injuries on his back, neck, and head. He was immediately admitted to JMCH (Jorhat Medical College and Hospital) for treatment.
In response to the ongoing incidents, a team from the forest department visited the location and installed a cage on Wednesday in an attempt to capture the stray leopard. It is worth mentioning that instances of leopards straying into human settlements in North West Jorhat have occurred sporadically, leading to such alarming incidents.
The presence of a wild leopard in close proximity to residential areas poses a significant threat to the safety of the villagers and their livestock.
Residents in the affected village have been advised to remain cautious and take necessary precautions until the situation is resolved.
