KOKRAJHAR, Nov 27: The surge of malaria in Kokrajhar district and its adjoining areas has been creating chaos among the citizens over the past few days.
Notably, five people have succumbed to the disease in recent days—including a 4-year-old girl—raising significant public health concerns in the region.
According to official data, 2,096 malaria-positive cases have been recorded in 2024 so far, compared to just 256 cases in 2023.
A review meeting on the malaria outbreak was held at Chandrapara in Kokrajhar with officials from the medical department, the district malaria officer, and other stakeholders. The meeting, chaired by Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Executive Member Arup Kumar Dey, the district commissioner, and CEM Pramod Boro, focused on strategies to curb the spread of the disease in the region.
Pramod Boro, chief executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Region, chaired the meeting and discussed preventive measures and strategic initiatives to eradicate malaria.
CEM Boro stated that malaria cases are rising in Kokrajhar district and other parts of BTR, with 2,096 cases reported (Plasmodium Vivax: 1,674, Plasmodium Falciparum: 422) and five fatalities. He said that the BTR government and the Health Department are taking stern steps to eradicate malaria through strategic measures. He informed that the concerned authorities have initiated necessary actions such as organising medical camps, active monitoring, bolstering health teams, and deploying ambulance services in the affected areas. He urged everyone to take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease and to avail the medical facilities being provided by the Health and Family Welfare Department.
“Our government remains committed to achieving a ‘Malaria-Free BTR’. Reaffirming this commitment, I chaired a meeting on Tuesday evening with officials from the medical department to discuss strategies to curb the spread of this dreaded disease in the region,” Boro added.
Meanwhile, Dr P Ashok Babu, commissioner & secretary to the government of Assam, Health & Family Welfare Department, is scheduled to arrive in Kokrajhar on Thursday morning to assess the prevailing malaria situation. He will visit the malaria-endemic Lungsung area to evaluate the situation and hold a review meeting with officials from the Health Department and district administration.
