MARGHERITA, Sept 4: Massive soil erosion caused by the Buridehing River has wreaked havoc in the Masjid Patty area of Margherita, leaving a trail of destruction across several locations within the 83 Margherita constituency in Tinsukia district.

The erosion has claimed hundreds of bighas of land, drastically altering the landscape and displacing numerous families.

One of the hardest-hit areas, Ward 5 of the Margherita Municipal Board, has seen significant damage.

The erosion has not only submerged the homes of several families along the riverbanks but has also led to the closure of the only road providing access to the area, effectively isolating the community.

The situation is dire, with approximately 100 families now facing the imminent threat of losing their homes, where many people have already fled, abandoning what remains of their properties.

Despite the severity of the situation, local authorities, including Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, the Margherita Municipality, and the Margherita Sub-Divisional Administration, are yet to visit the affected area and extend support to the victims.

Mohammed Toufik Khan, a local resident of Masjid Patty, said that he has informed Anand Kumar Sharma, chairman of the Margherita Municipal Board, several times, but every time he was assured that the soil erosion problem would be solved at the earliest. Unfortunately, nobody is giving importance to the minority area.

The silence and inaction from the concerned authorities have sparked outrage among the local population, who feel abandoned in their time of need. As the erosion continues, the affected families are left to fend for themselves, with little hope of immediate intervention or relief.
