NWJFPC purchases foxtail millets from Nagaon farmers

NAGAON, Sept 11: The North West Jorhat Farmers Production Company (NWJFPC), based in Jorhat, ceremonially acquired 25 quintals of foxtail millets from 18 farmers in the Nagaon district. This transaction is part of the Assam Millets Mission, sponsored by the state government, which aims to promote the cultivation and consumption of millets.

The purchase took place at a rate of Rs 40 per kilogram, and payment cheques were handed over to the participating farmers. The district agriculture department in Nagaon had cultivated foxtail millets on 112 hectares of land as part of this initiative.

Key officials, including district commissioner Narendra Kr Shah, deputy district commissioner Lakshay Jyoti Das, district agriculture officer Satish Talukdar, and additional agriculture director Ranjan Prasad Deka, were present during the millet purchase event. They emphasized the nutritional benefits of millets and encouraged the acceptance of these crops among the public.

The Assam Millets Mission represents a concerted effort to promote millet cultivation as a source of high-quality nutrients, contributing to public health in the state.
