GUWAHATI, Nov 16: A total of 8,756 former militants have been rehabilitated under the Swavalamban scheme in the last two years, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday.
Sarma emphasized that the surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy, coupled with the Swavalamban scheme, provided skill development training, enabling these individuals to lead dignified lives.
“Inspired by Hon PM’s vision, a large number of militants have shunned the path of violence and decided to help us build a new Assam. Under the surrender-cum- rehabilitation policy & #Swavalamban scheme they received skill development training & are now leading a dignified life”, Sarma wrote on microblogging site X.
As per the tally shared Assam chief minister, a total of 4203 cadres from NDFB, 1926 Karbi, 1182 Adivasi, 301 NLFB, 88 ADF, 63 NSLA, 28 RNLF, 29 UPRF, 124 ULFA (I), 127 UGPO, 74 TLA, 38 KNLA, 11 DNLA and 181 under Memorandum of Settlement (MoS), 164 NLFB (Bodo) 184 among others have been rehabilitated.
It is worth mentioning that this initiative, launched by the Assam government in 2019, focuses on reintegrating individuals with militant backgrounds into mainstream society.
