GUWAHATI, Dec 30: Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have hailed the Central government for taking the “monumental initiative” of signing a peace accord with a key faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
The ULFA’s pro-talks faction on Friday signed the accord with the central and the Assam governments in New Delhi in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“The peace agreement is an important milestone in Assam, and will definitely herald a new chapter of peace and development. This monumental initiative signifies a crucial development towards regional peace and stability,” Kataria said in a statement here.
Kataria also congratulated the signatories as they embark on a transformative journey, aligning with our nation’s vision of development, taking all sections of people on board.
Meanwhile, the chief minister said that the peace agreement with the pro-talk faction of the ULFA will have a huge impact across the North East and Bharat.
He said this in a reply to Union minister Kiren Rijiju, who congratulated him for signing the accord along with other BJP leaders.
“Thank you for your kind words Hon’ble Minister. This peace agreement will have a huge impact across the North East and Bharat,” Sarma wrote on micro-blogging site X.
He further said that a peaceful, prosperous and developed North East is a dream of every Bharatiya and that is being fulfilled due to the relentless efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The Ashthalakshmi is steadily becoming the engine of growth and inclusivity in the country,” he added.
The chief minister expressed hope that the signing of the agreement with ULFA will ensure all-round development of not only Assam but the entire region.
“Totally agree with you Hon’ble chief minister; the signing of peace agreement with ULFA will ensure all-round development of not only Assam but the entire region. With Hon’ble Prime Minister’s blessings, North East will together contribute towards building a Viksit Bharat,” he avowed.
He further emphasised the absence of a place for violence in contemporary times, expressing optimism that this stance would motivate others to join the mainstream and contribute to nation-building.
“Indeed a landmark occasion in Assam’s history, Dada. Our people longed for permanent peace with ULFA so that the development journey can continue unbridled,” he added.
Sarma said that with the blessings of the Prime Minister and home minister and with peace prevailing in the state, Assam is poised for greater heights.
