DIBRUGARH, Feb 28: In a rare sighting, elusive Marbel cats have been spotted through camera traps in Dehing Patkai National Park in Tinsukia.
Digboi DFO TC Ranjit Ram said, “We have spotted 2-3 Marbel cats in Dehing Patkai National parks and reserve under Digboi forest division during our two months camera trapping. The camera trapping was started from November 2024 with Wildlife Institute of India(WII) jointly and during the two months period, the camera has trapped 2-3 Marbel cats,”.
“The project was jointly done with WII and we are glad to inform that our camera which set up in various areas of the Dehing Patkai National park and reserve forest have successfully spotted Marbel cats,” Ram said.
In a Facebook post, Assam forest minister Chandra Mohan Patowary wrote, “Exciting conservation news!! Our camera trap inside Dehing Patkai National Park just captured a rare sighting of elusive Marbled Cat. The marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata) is a small wild cat native from the eastern Himalayas to Southeast Asia, where it inhabits forests up to an elevation of 2,500 m. It has been listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List.”
