SIVASAGAR, Oct 8: A talk on the topic of ‘Juvenile delinquency: Role of teachers and guardians’ was organized by Sivasagar Jila Mahila Samity at its Phukan Nagar office building. The event brought attention to the important role that teachers and guardians play in preventing juvenile delinquency.
Dr Rekha Borthakur, Associate Professor at Sibsagar College, Jaysagar, delivered the talk and emphasized the crucial need for love and care from elders in a child’s life. She explained that this love and care act as an emotional shield that discourages delinquent thoughts. Drawing from her personal experiences in raising children, Dr Borthakur emphasized that children can be taught valuable life lessons at home through love and compassionate guidance.
Hachna Ara Begum, a former professor of education at Sivasagar College, highlighted that juvenile delinquency tends to be more prevalent among adolescents from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Drawing from her extensive experience of working with delinquent adolescents and youths, Dipali Bhattacharjya, the chairperson of the seminar, emphasized that delinquent young individuals can be redirected towards a path of normal education and mental development through compassionate behavior and a healthy environment.
Monica Saikia, the president of Jila Mohila Samity, stressed the importance of not punishing children for petty crimes but rather persuading them with love. Senior journalist Atanu Bora discussed the pivotal role of teachers in shaping a child’s future, emphasizing their influence on a child’s mind and career. He also emphasized the need for significant changes in the social system to empower and enable good teachers to flourish.
