Morigaon, June 27: Several Tiwa organisations, including All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU), All Tiwa Women Association (ATWA), Tiwa Cultural Society (TCS), Tiwa Yuba Chatra Parishad (TYCP), All Tiwa Protection Committee (ATPC), Morigaon Zila Janajati Karmachari Sangstha (MZJKS), Tiwa Literary Body (TLB), Oitihasik Tiwa Rajdarbar (OTRD), and Morigaon Zila Tribal Sangha (MZTS), united under the banner of Morigaon (ST) Reserve LAC Demand Committee (MRLACDC), have reiterated their demand for the government to reserve the 54 no Morigaon constituency for ST (Scheduled Tribe) as it consists of 39.95 percent ST population. The Tiwa organisations have pointed out that the 54 no Morigaon constituency was previously reserved for ST before 1977. However, during the delimitation process in 1976-77, a conspiracy led to the removal of the constituency’s reservation status by deducting three ST-dominated Maujas (localities) – Uttarkhula, Guva, and Ghaguwa – and adding three Maujas – Barapujia, Charaibahi, and Mikirbheta – which have a lower number of ST inhabitants. In protest against the non-reservation of the constituency, the organisations staged a three-hour sit-in in front of the Morigaon deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of Assam, demanding the reservation of the Morigaon constituency.
