BISWANATH CHARIALI, Sept 9: To commemorate the diamond jubilee of Tyagbir Hem Baruah College, two books were launched on Monday in a program held at the Harakanta Gogoi Auditorium of the college. The first book, āSilhouette Vol. 1ā, is a compilation of articles on āTrauma Studies: Violence, Memory and Recoveryā, edited by Dr Sudha Sharma and Dr Rajlaxmi Basumatary. Published by the Tyagbir Hem Baruah College Publication Board, the book was officially launched by Ranen Deka, former vice principal and head of the department of English at Rangapara College. In his inaugural address, Deka praised the college’s initiative and highlighted how the book’s focus on trauma would provide readers and researchers with valuable insights into the complex issues surrounding trauma, violence, and memory. He also commended the efforts of the editors for their thorough work in bringing the book to completion, emphasising the unique nature of such a scholarly contribution in Assam. Prof Deka further elaborated on the background and growth of trauma literature, stating that compiling and editing articles that explore various dimensions of trauma as presented in art and literature is a rare and commendable endeavour in the region. He expressed his appreciation for the editors and publishers for their dedication.
The second book, āTorar Botoraā, a translation of Galileo Galileiās āSidereus Nunciusā, was also released during the event by Dr Ajit Hazarika, principal of the college. The Assamese translation was undertaken by Dr Rasna Rajkhowa.
The programme, conducted by Sumanta Rajbanshi, began with the illumination of the ceremonial lamp, followed by a Saraswati Vandana performed by Krishnagni Baruah, a third-semester student. The audience was also entertained by Abantika Saha, an MA student in English, who performed āRabindra Sangeetā.
Dr Sudha Sharma, sharing her experience as an editor, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming response the book received from contributors both nationally and internationally. She noted that the articles delve into various types and aspects of trauma, offering opportunities for further research and exploration in the field.
Dr Bipul Kumar Borah, president of the Governing Body, and Dr Sanjeev Upadhyay also addressed the gathering. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr Rajlaxmi Basumatary.
