World No Tobacco Day observed in Golaghat with awareness drives

GOLAGHAT, May 31: In observance of World No Tobacco Day, the Office of the Joint Director of Health Services, Golaghat, organised a series of awareness programmes across the district on Saturday to highlight the harmful effects of tobacco use.

The day began with an awareness rally, flagged off at 9:30 A.M. by Dr Badilal Deuri, Joint Director of Health Services, from the premises of Swahid Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital.

The rally saw active participation from Dr Utpal Bora, District Nodal Officer, officials from the National Health Mission, the District TB Control Programme, healthcare workers, GNM students, and ASHA workers.

Following the rally, a street play was performed by the health department at Bata Point in Golaghat town.

The performance urged people to boycott tobacco and highlighted its devastating impact on health.

The street play drew a large crowd, including local residents and officials from the health department.

An awareness meeting was also organised at Merapani Jatiya Vidyalaya in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority.

Students of Classes 8, 9, and 10 attended the programme, where Dr Utpal Bora spoke about the serious health risks associated with tobacco use.

Students also took a pledge to abstain from tobacco.

Advocate Rahul Bora, representing the Legal Services Authority, addressed the gathering on the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).

He explained the legal implications of violating the act and the penalties imposed for such offences.

In addition to the central events, awareness meetings were held at every health centre in Golaghat district to engage local communities and reinforce the message about the dangers of tobacco consumption.
