NAGAON, July 8: The Nagaon District Unit, in collaboration with the Subdivision Unit and Nagaon Sadar Unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), organised a special felicitation program at Nagaon Swahid Bhavan last Sunday to honour meritorious students who excelled in the 2024 HSLC and HS Final Examinations.

The felicitation program, chaired by Simanta Bora, President of the Nagaon District unit of AASU, was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police, Nagaon, Swapnanil Deka. Dr Samujjwal Bhattacharya, Chief Adviser of AASU, attended the event as the chief guest. Educationist Dr. Sarat Borkatoki, Principal of Ramanujan Senior Secondary School, Nagaon, Dilip Bora, former AASU worker Amarjit Goswami, student leaders Debajit Bora and Gouri Shankar Saikia, along with central executive member of the students’ organization Mriganka Shekhar Bharali, were also present as special guests and invitees. Bhaswat Saikia, who cleared the Union Public Service Competitive Exams 2024, was felicitated during the program.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Samujjwal Bhattacharya emphasised the need for reforms in Assam’s education system, stressing the importance of enhancing the number of departments in the state’s colleges and universities. He pointed out the disparity, citing that Delhi University has 84 departments compared to 48 in Gauhati University and 29 in Dibrugarh University. Dr Bhattacharya expressed concern over brain drain from the state and urged the government to foster higher education within Assam, rather than students seeking education outside the state.

Dr Bhattacharya also announced AASU’s initiative to introduce UPSC coaching for meritorious students in the state starting next year. He further advocated for the establishment of a research institute for the Brahmaputra river to address long-standing issues like flood devastation across the state.
