TEZPUR, May 13: A cultivator of village Pogolabill near Ghoirali Tea Estate under Rangapara PS in Sonitpur District was killed by a wild elephant on Tuesday morning.
The deceased identified as Krishna Kheria (40) was busy in ploughing in his agricultural field while he faced the attack of the wild pachyderm. The village headman of the area, Tapan Boro informed that at the moment of his untimely demise, the deceased leaves behind his wife and two sons.
It is to be noted here that the area has been struggling with the human-wild elephant conflict over the years and losing many human lives due to the frequent mayhem created by the wild elephants’ herd coming down from the Sonai Rupai wildlife sanctuary and Nameri National Park.
On receiving the information, the forest department’s team rushed to the incident site and chased away the animal from the area and took stock of the situation. Now the victim’s family appealed to the forest department as well as the district administration to compensate them as he was the only income source for the family.
