GUWAHATI, June 2: Discipline of Political Science of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU), Guwahati, organised a seminar titled “Constitution of India – Defender of Democracy” at the University’s City Office, Khanapara on May 29.
The event was held to celebrate 75 years of the Indian Constitution under the banner of Samvidhan Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
At the outset, Abhijit Bhuyan, the seminar coordinator, outlined the seminar’s objectives, linking it to a national initiative by the Government. Professor Joydeep Baruah, Director of Surya Kumar Bhuyan School of Social Sciences, KKHSOU delivered the welcome address wherein he emphasized that the Constitution envisioned political equality as a pathway to social and economic justice, assigning liberal democratic rights to individuals on the one hand and socio-economic responsibilities to the state through the Directive Principles of State Policy on the other. Citing Ambedkar, he called for renewed engagement with the Constitution’s foundational commitment to true equality.
The keynote speaker of the seminar was Professor Shantanu Chakravarty- Dean, Humanities and Social Sciences and Head of the Department of Political Science at Girijananda Choudhury University. In his keynote address, Professor Chakravarty praised the Constitution’s enduring role in sustaining democracy in a diverse and unequal society. He discussed key constitutional features such as Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, federalism, secularism, linguistic and cultural inclusivity, and judicial review as pillars of democratic resilience.
Significantly, the seminar carried a segment for paper presentations by KKHSOU doctoral scholars on themes like Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, federalism, and the Sixth Schedule.
In his presidential address, Vice Chancellor of KKHSOU, Professor Rajendra Prasad Das emphasized the importance of organizing such an event and appreciated the Government’s initiative to celebrate the historic milestone of 75 years of the Constitution. He highlighted the value of such commemorative efforts in sensitizing people, especially the youth, about the Constitution. The Vice Chancellor noted that beyond remembering a historic document, events like this reaffirm our collective commitment to the core democratic ideals of liberty, equality, justice, and fraternity.
The seminar which saw the participation of faculty members, officials, research scholars and staff members of the University, concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Jahnabi Devi, Assistant Professor (Political Science) at KKHSOU.
