3 killed in elephant attack in state

TEZPUR, April 27: Three persons, including two forest guards, were killed and another person was injured in an attack by a wild elephant in Sonitpur district on Saturday, a forest official said.

A wild elephant strayed into the Dhirai Majuli village from the nearby Dhekiajuli forest and trampled three persons to death on the spot and injured another employee of the forest department, when the forest personnel were patrolling the area, West Tezpur divisional forest officer Nipen Kalita said.

The deceased have been identified as forest guards Koleswar Boro and Biren Rabha, and the local person as Jatin Tanti, he said, adding the injured person, Dibakar Malakar, has been admitted to a hospital and his condition is stated to be critical.

According to the sources, Joton Tanti (62) had gone to the lavatory when the wild elephant, taking shelter in the area, attacked and killed him on the spot.

While Koleswar Boro was a resident of Samukia under Bihaguri police outpost, Biren Rabha was a resident of Singri area under Dhekiajuli Police Station in Sonitpur District and posted as forest guard under Amaribari range of the Sonitpur forest department.

Efforts are underway to push back the elephant into the forest, he added.

Meanwhile, locals of the Dhiraimajuli area alleged that the wild elephant have been creating havoc among the villagers for the past few days. (With inputs from PTI)
