SIVASAGAR, Jan 27: All Assam Students Union’s (AASU) two-day special general meeting got underway in the Swargadeu Saulung Siu-ka-Fa Samannay Kshetra near the historic Talatal ghar premises on Monday.
The Talala ghar premises and the entire Jaysagar area wore a festive air with over 5000 student representatives from different districts assembled here in the morning.
Hoisting the AASU flag, AASU president Utpal Sarmah said that the people of Sivasagar always stood behind the people of Assam at the time of crisis. The first annual general meeting was held in 1979 that initiated the Assam Movement.
Criticising the present government, he said that the ruling power wants all the people to be under one culture, one language, and one religion denying the multiplicity of Indian culture.
Sarma lambasted the state government for alleged failures in Education, the Jal Jiwan Mission, and all other issues raised often by the non-BJP political parties.
Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjya, chief adviser, AASU paid tributes to the Swahids of the Assam Movement and appreciated the organisational skill of the Sivasagar District Students Union. He said that AASU would like to draw a roadmap in the delegates’ meeting for good and quality education, where students of all categories will benefit.
“A doubt has crept into our mind whether the Assam we love would remain intact in future due to divisive forces.” he further highlighted.
Bhattacharya stressed on an intellectual, cultural, and educational movement in Assam through Asom Unnati Sabha and other organisations which will lead to more production and more income for every household. The cultural programmes were inaugurated by Samujjal Bhattacharjya.
He also criticised the government for creating a huge beneficiary group at the expense of a productive workforce.
Sarju Hanche in his speech said that the political parties come to the people only at the time of election.
The morning session was attended by AASU general Secretary (i/c) Sarju Hanche, president of the reception committee Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, executive president Sarat Hazarika, general secretary, Samiran Phukan, Manob Hazarika, Brojen Bora, Punaram Mili, Buddhin Mishra, Lakhikanta Mahanta, Santu Borthakur, Dilip Das, Deba Hazarika, Manoj Bhagawati, Dr Utpal Dutta, and a host of distinguished citizens.
