GUWAHATI, Aug 19: A complaint filed with the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, has led to the exposure of corrupt practices by Achyut Das, Lot Mandal at the office of the circle officer, Guwahati Revenue Circle, Kamrup Metropolitan district. The complaint alleged that Das demanded a bribe of Rs 9,000 for processing mutation works, which he later reduced to Rs 8,000.
Refusing to bow down to extortion, the complainant sought legal recourse and approached the Directorate for assistance. In response, an elaborate sting operation was executed on Saturday, with the participation of the Vigilance team. The operation was carried out at the office of the circle officer, Ulubari, Guwahati Revenue Circle.
In a swift turn of events, Achyut Das was caught red-handed around 1:40 PM, immediately after he accepted Rs 5,000 as part of the bribe demanded from the complainant. The tainted bribe money was recovered from his possession and seized in the presence of independent witnesses. Additionally, during a thorough body search, an extra sum of Rs 9,500 was found in his pocket and was also seized with proper documentation.
The comprehensive evidence compiled against the accused public servant has led to his arrest by the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam. The case was formally registered in ACB police station on Saturday, under ACB P.S. Case No. 65/2023, invoking Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).
Legal proceedings are currently underway to ensure justice is served, a Directorate release stated.
