GUWAHATI, Sept 6: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria embarked on his maiden visit to Majuli district, where he made several significant stops, including Auniati Satra, Kamalabari Satra, Garmur Satra, and Dakhinpat Satra, to pay his respects. During his visit, he participated in a prayer meeting organised by female devotees to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami and immersed himself in the spiritual atmosphere of the Satras. Additionally, he explored the museums within the Satras, where he admired their antique collections and pledged financial support from his end to aid in preserving the state’s heritage.

The Governor also conducted a review meeting with the district commissioner, superintendent of police, and other department heads, where he conducted a comprehensive assessment of various Central and state government projects underway in Majuli. Notably, he commended the district’s exemplary implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and expressed his satisfaction with the successful execution of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). He encouraged officials to accelerate the progress of SBM Phase II in Majuli.

Addressing the state of education, the Governor urged district officials to promote Vidyanjali 2.0 among the masses. He emphasised that many individuals with philanthropic inclinations could step forward to support education and students. To this end, he requested the district commissioner and education department officials to involve such individuals in Vidyanjali 2.0. He also stressed the need to enhance public participation by encouraging people to adopt schools and contribute to the infrastructural development of educational institutions. While acknowledging the district’s lower dropout rates and favorable student-teacher ratios, he encouraged further improvements.

Regarding the fishery department in the district, the Governor highlighted the importance of boosting economic development through increased fish production. As Majuli is the only island district, he emphasized the need to revamp the fisheries sector to meet local demands as well as those of neighboring districts.
