DEMOW, Aug 1: Approximately 45 bighas of land in the Mohkhutie area, near Mohkhutie Tea Estate, falls under the Demow Revenue Circle. Sources indicate that three schemes—Massive Plantation under Amrit Brikshya, Nursery with Mixed Plantation, and Nursery with Boundary Plantation—are set to be implemented under MGNREGA within the Demow development block.
On June 30, a dispute arose when workers began labelling the land with a JCB. Leaders of the Tea Tribes Students Association and local labourers protested, claiming that the land belonged to Mohkhutie Tea Estate and was being surveyed without consulting them.
When contacted for clarification by this correspondent, the Demow circle officer stated that, according to current records, the land is government property. On Wednesday, the ATTSA’s Mohkhutie sub-branch submitted a memorandum to the district commissioner of Sivasagar district via the Demow circle officer. The memorandum requested that the land be preserved for tea cultivation to protect the future of tea tribes people. The ATTSA warned that if their demands are not met, they will initiate democratic protest programs in defence of the tea labourers’ interests.
