GUWAHATI, March 13: Adding another glorious chapter to the ongoing process of industrialization in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday virtually laid the foundation stone for the Tata Group’s ₹27,000-crore indigenous “semiconductor assembly & test facility” at Jagiroad in Morigaon district.
This apart, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stones for the Tata-Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing’s “Semiconductor Fabrication Unit” at Dholera and that for the CG Power-Renesas outsourced assembly and test (OSAT) facility at Sanand, both in Gujarat.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was present at the event organised at the site of the facility in Jagiroad, said today is a landmark day for Assam and the North East.
“This is the first time that an investment of this huge amount (Rs 27,000 crore) is being made in the state, which will put Assam and the North East on the industrial map of the country. This has been possible only due to the initiative taken by the prime minister,” Sarma said on the occasion.
This is an “emotional day” for the people of Assam as the facility is coming up on the site of the Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) which had to be closed down in the state, he said.
“The people were very sad about the closure of HPCL. I, however, looked for possibilities and now a new era of development has come,” Sarma said.
Sarma said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “geographical barrier” is no more a hindrance in the process of industrialisation of Assam and the rest of the Northeastern states.
The people of Assam shall remain forever indebted to the Prime Minister for his role in the ushering of a new wave of development and progress in the state, the Chief Minister added.
The Chief Minister praised the Tata Group for coming forward with investments to the tune of ₹27,000 crore and assured the multi-billion dollar conglomerate of doing everything within the capacity of the government of Assam to provide a conducive industrial environment.
He said the investment by Tata Group in Jagiroad shall contribute greatly towards the process of economic growth of the state and the country.
Referring to the foundation stone laying for the semiconductor unit at Jagiroad an emotional moment for him, the Chief Minister said it has the potential to provide direct employment to as many as 15,000 youth of the State and provide indirect employment opportunities to equal number of job-seekers.
He appealed to the people of Assam to shed the “culture” of strikes/andolans/hartals and embrace positivity and optimism so that Assam can attain its rightful position among the States of the Indian Union.
Union Minister of Communications and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Chairman of Tata Sons N Chandrasekaran joined through the video-conference mode.
Deputy Chairman of Assam Legislative Assembly Dr. Numal Momin, Ministers of Assam Cabinet Pijush Hazarika, Bimal Bora, Jogen Mohan, Keshab Mahanta, along with a host of dignitaries were present at Jagiroad on the occasion.
Semiconductor assembly and testing is a critical part of the value chain where wafers manufactured by semiconductor fabs are assembled or packaged and then tested before they are finally used in the desired product.
The proposed facility will serve the growing global demands across key market segments like AI, industrial, and consumer electronics, the company said. (With inputs from PTI)
