MANGALDAI, May 31: A commemorative book titled “Chandrajyoti,” chronicling the life and legacy of noted social worker Chandra Kanta Kalita, was released on his first death anniversary at a solemn event held in Mangaldai on Friday.

The book was formally unveiled by Dr. Kamala Kanta Bora, Principal of Mangaldai College and a respected educationist. In his address, Dr. Bora drew a parallel between Mangaldai’s Pritinagar locality and the village of Ogimi in Okinawa, Japan—renowned for its strong community bonds. He credited the late Kalita as the unifying force behind Pritinagar’s close-knit spirit.

Chandra Kanta Kalita, remembered as both a committed social worker and an avid reader, played a significant role in various social and religious organisations. He was closely associated with the Darrang District Kalita Sammilani, the Mangaldai Sanatan Dharma Sabha, and regularly participated in events in Dipila.

Among the distinguished guests was Phulendra Nath Saharia, former president of the Darrang District Sahitya Sabha, who praised Kalita as a man of deep devotion. “He was someone who not only worshipped but actively served—often seen cleaning temple premises. That was his way of expressing true spirituality,” Saharia remarked.

Speakers Bhumidhar Barua and Puran Chandra Deka spoke about Kalita’s generosity, his unwavering commitment to Pritinagar, and his approachable, sincere nature. They also recalled his years of service at the local post office, where he continued to support the community in various ways.

The memorial meeting was presided over by Bharat Bhushan Kalita, former president of the Darrang District Sahitya Sabha. Ahead of the programme, family members of the late Chandra Kanta Kalita welcomed attendees with traditional gamochas, adding a cultural and personal touch to the tribute.
