DIPHU, Nov 16: A team from Centre for Urbanization, Buildings & Environment (CUBE) from IIT Madras, is on a three day visit in Karbi Anglong district, to inspect the technical and social aspects of the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), which is a Central and State government sponsored scheme aimed at providing safe drinking water to every rural household and public institution in India by 2024. In Karbi Anglong district the PHE Rural Division is the nodal agency for implementing JJM.
CUBE has been raised by IIT Madras and Government of Tamil Nadu as an applied research, technology and consultancy centre.
Technical Auditors of CUBE IIT Madras, Chenna Prasad R and Upam Dev Agnibashya, the two officials in their three day visit in the district have inspected the five completed Pipe Water Supply Scheme (PWSS) of JJM, which are in operation providing free flow of piped water to the doorstep in rural households and public institutions.
On Saturday, the team accompanied by Biman Baruah, executive engineer and Bikrom Teron, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Diphu Rural PHE Division visited Jeng Bey PWSS, under JJM at Langsoli-et, which is 23 km from here, to find out about the functioning of the scheme. The two officers inspected the whole plant like the pump house, water tank, solar panels, boring, water tape and also interacted with the villagers.
The Jeng Bey PWSS was completed on December 24, 2023 with a total cost of Rs. 68,53,235 out of which central share is Rs. 58,59,515.93 and state share is Rs. 6,51,057.33. As informed by Longki Bey S/o of the village headman of Mensing Bey, said it covers two villages Jeng Bey with 44 families and Diliram Terang with 40 families. While the information provided on the board for Functional Household Tape Connection (FHTC) is 74 families. Inglongkiri Medical Sub-Centre and Nilalung LP School are also covered under Jeng Bey PWSS.
The Technical Auditor, CUBE IIT Madras, Chenna, Prasad R said, “We come here to audit the JJM implementation in Karbi Anglong. We have done the survey, where JJM are provided and looked into the whole thing. We also interacted with the villagers about JJM and whether it benefited them or not.”
The technical auditor also expressed satisfactory in all the sites they visited as the piped water has reach to every household. All the reports collected will be submitted to the JJM head office.
Earlier, Longki Bey, S/o Mening Bey, of headman of Jeng Bey village told the visiting team that before the PWSS was set up, villagers have to reach down to the stream to fetch water. It was a long walk and time consuming. Some households draw water from kutcha ringwells and during rainy season the water is muddy. Now as the PWSS has been installed villagers are overjoyed particularly women as the burden of fetching water from kutcha ringwells and rivers is no more.
The executive engineer, Baruah said in Karbi Anglong there are 525 new JJM schemes and out of this 140 schemes have been complete. Another 385 schemes are yet to be completed.
On November 14 and 15 the CUBE team visited Hemai Vothung Rongpi PWSS, Hidipi; Kirilangso PWSS, Upper Deopani; Hanboka PWSS, Deithor; Kaipholangso PWSS and Dolamora PWSS.
