DIPHU, April 16: The district commissioner of Karbi Anglong has imposed a ban on the sale of alcohol in the bordering districts of Assam (Karbi Anglong) and Nagaland ahead of the General Election 2024.
“In view of the General Election 2024 for the Parliamentary Constituencies in the State of Nagaland, to be held in the first phase, the Governor of Assam hereby prohibits the possession of any intoxicants by any individual or group of individuals. There is a total ban on the sale of liquor, and distribution of spirituous, fermented, or intoxicating liquors or similar substances at any hotel, eating house, tavern, shop, or any other public or private place within the adjoining bordering districts of Assam and Nagaland,” an official statement read.
It further said that this prohibition is effective for a period of 48 hours, ending with the conclusion of polling on April 19, 2024, starting from 4:00 pm on April 17, 2024.
“Additionally, it extends to the day of vote counting, which is scheduled for June 4, 2024. The period including any re-polling, if required, is also declared as a DRY DAY until the counting process is completed. During this time, all bonded warehouses, IMFL retail “OFF” / “ON” shops, including Club ON, Hotel ON, Star Hotels, Country Spirit Shops, and other establishments selling or serving liquor, will remain closed,” the order read further.
Individuals storing alcohol will be subject to restrictions, and the enforcement of regulations regarding the storage of liquor in unlicensed premises will be strictly enforced, it said.
“Any violations of this order will be addressed according to the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act and Rules, and action will be taken against offenders immediately,” the order concluded.
