KOKRAJHAR, Sept 1: Kokrajhar Medical College & Hospital (KMCH) welcomed its first batch of MBBS students in a grand inauguration ceremony at the medical college & hospital complex in Beswargaon, Kokrajhar. The event saw an extensive gathering and was graced by Keshab Mahanta, the minister for Health & Family Welfare of Assam, and Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Urkhao Gwra Brahma, a cabinet minister of Assam, was also in attendance.
The inaugural batch comprises 87 students, consisting of 38 girls and 49 boys. Principal Dr Atul Chandra Boro, in his welcome address, expressed gratitude to the guests, senior citizens, parents, and guardians for their participation in this historic moment for KMCH. He expressed hope that the inaugural batch would excel and shine in their medical careers, encouraging them to prioritise their health for success in their medical journey.
Health minister Keshab Mahanta emphasised the significance of the day, marking the ceremonial start of the first MBBS batch in three new medical colleges, including Kokrajhar Medical College. He highlighted the shortage of doctors in Assam’s hospitals but expressed optimism that this issue would be resolved with the establishment of more medical colleges in the state under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Mahanta conveyed that the crisis of doctors in Assam would be resolved in the coming years, as more medical colleges are set to be established.
CEM Pramod Boro underscored the importance of the day for Bodoland and lower Assam, stating KMCH’s role in providing medical services to the region and producing quality doctors. He encouraged the budding doctors to carry forward the tradition of compassion and excellence in patient care.
Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma deemed it a historic moment for the region, with KMCH realising a prime demand of the Bodoland movement. He lauded the inaugural batch, affirming that their names would be etched in the college’s history.
The event also witnessed the administration of the medical practitioner’s pledge to the new students. MLAs Lawrence Islary and Jiron Basumatary, BTR EMs Reoreoa Narzihary and Arup Kumar Dey, and senior government officials graced the occasion.
