KOKRAJHAR, Nov 29: Sensation gripped Kokrajhar town following the murder of a retired agriculture engineer on Wednesday morning in Ward No. 3. The incident involved a labourer working on the construction of the engineer’s house, who entered the residence around 5 am and attacked the elderly couple with a sharp dao.

The engineer, Tapan Chakrabarty, sustained serious injuries to his neck and body, leading to his demise at the Lower Assam Hospital in Bongaigaon. His wife, Madhumitha Banerjee, also suffered severe injuries and is receiving treatment in a Kokrajhar hospital.

The assailant, identified as Sambhu Kahar, fled the scene after the attack, attempting to snatch the couple’s property, including gold ornaments and cash. The incident has prompted a high-level police investigation.

Local residents, shocked by the crime, are demanding a thorough investigation and the swift apprehension of the culprit for a stringent legal response. Pramod Boro, the chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region, and local MLA Lawrence Islary have condemned the incident, urging the police administration to take strict measures and ensure justice for the victims.
