The Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has successfully performed its first cadaver kidney transplant, marking a significant achievement in Assam’s medical history. This pioneering procedure involved a multi-disciplinary team of specialists, including nephrologists and transplant surgeons, who worked collaboratively to ensure the success of the operation.
The transplant was made possible through the generous donation of organs from a deceased donor, highlighting the growing importance of organ donation awareness in the region. The recipient, who had been on dialysis for an extended period, is now recovering well under medical supervision. This successful procedure is expected to pave the way for more such transplants in the future, improving the lives of patients with end-stage renal disease in Northeast India.
