Pune, May 22: Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar announced that the 17-year-old boy responsible for the fatal collision in Pune, involving two motorcycle-borne IT professionals, will be prohibited from obtaining a driving license until he turns 25. State transport officials revealed that the permanent registration of the Porsche Taycan, driven during the incident, had been pending since March due to an unpaid fee of Rs 1,758.
Bhimanwar informed the PTI news agency on Tuesday that the luxury vehicle, which was involved in the accident on Sunday in Kalyani Nagar, will not be permitted to register at any Regional Transport Office (RTO) for 12 months, as its existing temporary registration will be canceled in accordance with the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act.
“When it was presented at the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), it was discovered that a required registration fee had not been paid. The owner was instructed to pay the fee to complete the registration process,” Bhimanwar explained. He noted that the vehicle had been sent to Pune on a temporary registration after being imported by a dealer based in Bengaluru.
“However, the vehicle was not brought back to the RTO to complete the registration process thereafter,” he added.
State transport officials clarified that electric vehicles registered in Maharashtra are exempt from road tax. The registration fees for the Porsche Taycan amounted to Rs 1,758, which included Rs 1,500 for hypothecation, Rs 200 for the smart card RC, and Rs 58 for postal charges.
Records indicate that the vehicle had a valid temporary registration certificate issued by Karnataka, valid for six months from March to September 2024. The Bengaluru-based dealer was deemed not at fault, having handed over the car after completing the temporary registration.
Vehicles with temporary registration are only allowed to travel to and from the RTO.
Bhimanwar further stated that the Pune RTO has been directed to file a police complaint for violations of the MV Act. Another senior transport department official confirmed that the Porsche would be impounded for 12 months. The official cited severe negligence in the accident, noting that the teen was driving at speeds exceeding 160 kmph and was allegedly intoxicated. Additionally, the teen committed multiple violations, including driving without a license and without proper vehicle registration.
