KYF celebrations turn ugly

DIPHU, Feb 20: The 51st Karbi Youth Festival (KYF) in Taralangso concluded in violence with burning of two vehicles and stone pelting by festival goers and police firing in the air.

As per preliminary reports, a ladder used for work at the temporary Toyota showroom by APDCL fell down due to the rush which injured two women.

Some youths took objection to the accident and got agitated.

Matters got out of control and the youths burned down a vehicle belonging to the APDCL wee hours of around 2 am.

The volunteers of Karbi Cultural Society (KCS) tried to pacify the youths but it was of no use.

The police and paramilitary forces arrived at the scene but the miscreants pelted stones at them as well.

The violent mob they burnt another pick-up truck of APDCL on their way back while leaving the scene.

The stone pelting incident injured one police constable and two fire fighters.

The large mob also targeted the cars of festival goers and fire brigades damaging them.
