HAMREN, Oct 19: An Awareness and Education Programme on drug addiction and substance abuse was organised by ‘My Bharat: Nehru Yuva Kendra,’ Diphu, Karbi Anglong, under the ministry of youth affairs & sports, Government of India.
The event took place at Navodeep Higher Secondary School, Kheroni Charali, West Karbi Anglong, and was held in collaboration with the social development organisation.
Key speakers present at the event addressed the gathering on crucial aspects of drug addiction and substance abuse.
Dr Surya Newar, head of the department at Kapili College, delivered a speech, emphasising the need for heightened awareness and education on drug addiction, especially among youth.
Jeetendra Harijan, vice principal of Kapili College, talked about promoting empathy and understanding towards individuals struggling with addiction, encouraging them to seek help. He also highlighted a critical issue of the supply of drugs from international border areas, which has a detrimental impact on youth in the region.
Rajesh Ram, a homoeopathic practitioner, highlighted the serious health hazards associated with drug consumption, providing insights into the physical and mental repercussions of addiction.
Other prominent attendees included Shiv Narayan Paul, president of the Karbi Anglong Hindi Bhashi Sanstha, Biresh Prasad, principal of Navodeep Higher Secondary School, and Dhanraj Harijan, former Nation Youth Corps.
The event witnessed active participation, with more than 150 youths and students from Navodeep Higher Secondary School, local clubs, NGOs, and various community organisations attending the programme.
This event was a significant step towards creating a community of informed and responsible citizens, addressing a burning issue that affects the nation’s future.
Earlier, the programme commenced with the traditional felicitation of guests and resource persons honoured with the gamosa. Following the felicitation, a floral tribute and the ceremonial lighting of a traditional lamp were conducted before a portrait of Youth Icon Swami Vivekananda, paying homage to his inspiring legacy.
