SIVASAGAR, June 10: BJP State President Dilip Saikia on Monday led a massive procession from the historic Siva-doul to the KPM Hall in Sivasagar to commemorate the completion of 11 years of the BJP-led Central Government and four years of its rule in Assam. The event, organized by the Sivasagar District BJP Committee, began with a warm welcome to Saikia and culminated in an open meeting at the KPM Hall premises.
Addressing the gathering, Saikia emphasized the Modi government’s “four-pronged development approach” — focusing on poverty eradication, infrastructure development, economic growth, and spiritual well-being. He highlighted the opening of 52 crore bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, of which 47 crore belong to women, calling it a significant step towards women’s empowerment.
Saikia also mentioned that India has become the world’s fourth-largest economy, with exports growing by 130% since 2014. He noted that Rs 37 lakh crore has been transferred directly to the bank accounts of the poor under various government schemes, resulting in a dramatic drop in the BPL (Below Poverty Line) population — from 27.1% to 5.3%. “Bringing 43 crore people above the poverty line is no small feat,” he said.
Taking a firm stand on protecting Assam’s cultural heritage, Saikia alleged that certain groups of doubtful nationality had encroached upon Satras, Namghars, and historical sites. He praised Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for reclaiming over 15,000 bighas of land from such encroachment.
Responding to questions on Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi’s rising political visibility, Saikia remarked, “The Congress says they want to govern, while we say we want to serve the people.”
He went on to laud several key initiatives of the Modi government, including:
Providing free rations to 81 crore people, constructing one medical college in every district (with 814 under construction), building 4 crore houses for the poor, connecting 2.8 lakh Gram Panchayats with the internet, and adopting zero tolerance towards terrorism
Saikia also cited the government’s success in freeing over 180 districts from Maoist influence and neutralizing 150 terrorists in 27 minutes in retaliation for the killing of 27 Hindus in Pahalgam.
He applauded Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for spearheading the state’s development, announcing that Rs 1.91 lakh crore is being invested in Assam, with an additional Rs 1 lakh crore in capital investments under Sarma’s leadership.
Dilip Saikia was accompanied at the event by prominent leaders including former MP Topon Kumar Gogoi, Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain, former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, and BJP Sivasagar District President Bitupon Raidongia.
