DIBRUGARH, Aug 1: Illegal liquor shops are thriving in the Paltan Bazar area of Dibrugarh town, causing significant distress among local residents due to the unhealthy atmosphere.
Residents report that the area from Paltan Bazar to Maijan has become a hotspot for anti-social activities, especially during the evening hours. “The illegal liquor shops are creating a nuisance throughout the area,” said a local resident.
The absence of police patrols has emboldened the owners of these illegal establishments. “Without police intervention, these businesses have flourished, turning the area into a den of criminal activity,” the resident added.
Ranjan Yadav, another local resident, expressed concerns about the safety of the community. “Drug addicts are freely roaming in the Maijan area and sometimes engage in street fights with local residents. The safety of people is at risk. We urge the police to increase patrolling to address these criminal activities.”
Yadav also criticised the operation of illegal liquor shops near educational institutions and religious places, which are prohibited by law. “Despite the regulations, many illegal liquor shops operate within 100 metres of these sensitive locations by exploiting corrupt police personnel,” Yadav alleged.
