JORHAT, Sept 25: Ajit Kalita of Gaurisagar, Sivasagar district was arrested on Monday on charges of duping a woman of cash and her mobile phone by posing as an official of the Jorhat Municipal Board.
Kalita, met the woman Mainee Tanti, a widow, while she was shopping at the Unnayan Bhawan complex on Saturday. The three storied Unnayan Bhawan also houses the Municipal Board and Zila Parishad office, apart from several shops let out by the Board.
Posing as an official of JMB, Kalita said that he would facilitate a widow pension scheme for her if she paid him an amount of Rs 20,000.
Lured by his proposal, Mainee brought the amount on Monday and gave it to him at the Unnayan Bhawan. Telling her that he would fill up her form online, he disappeared for a while inside the building. He told Mainee to wait for him outside.
He reappeared after sometime and asked her to give him her mobile phone as an OTP would be sent there. He then disappeared. When Mainee went in search of him after an hour or so, she could not find him anywhere inside the building, following which she lodged a police complaint.
