Prestigious Prashad Singh Subba Memorial Award presented to Subhash Chandra Biswas

TEZPUR, Sept 7: Subhash Chandra Biswas, a distinguished lawyer, social worker, and the executive editor of the Nepali Weekly ‘Desh Barta,’ has been honoured with the prestigious Prashad Singh Subba Memorial Award for the year 2023. The award, instituted by the Sonitpur District All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AGSU) in 2020, is named in memory of Prashad Singh Subba, a renowned social worker and freedom fighter, to acknowledge his unmatched contributions to the freedom movement and nation-building.

Dipak Subba, the president, and Hitesh Parajuli, the secretary of the Sonitpur District AAGSU, announced Biswas’s nomination for the award. The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AGSU), a prominent organisation representing the Gorkha (Nepali) community, has been presenting this award since 2020 to individuals who have made substantial contributions to society.

The late freedom fighter Prashad Singh Subba was not only a prominent figure in the freedom movement but also a pioneer in the agri-business sector. He was a founding member of the All Assam Grazier’s Association and established a dairy farm in Tezpur, contributing to self-reliance through milk production and dairy business.

Subhash Chandra Biswas, a noted lawyer at the Guwahati High Court, is an unsung hero with significant contributions to society, the media, the legal field, and literature. Hailing from Tezpur, he has contributed to various national and local English newspapers, including UNI. Presently, he serves as the executive editor of the Nepali weekly ‘Desh Barta’, published from Tezpur, making substantial contributions to Nepali language journalism. Since 1989, Biswas has dedicated himself to the survival and popularity of the Nepali Weekly, attracting readers from Assam, Nepal, West Bengal, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Dehradun. Known for his philanthropic spirit, Biswas consistently supports the underprivileged through pro bono legal assistance and financial aid.

The award will be presented to Subhash Chandra Biswas during a special ceremony on September 10 in Tezpur, coinciding with Prashad Singh Subba’s birth anniversary. The award includes a cash prize, a citation, and anga-bastra.
