NAGAON, June 6: The Zonal Research Station, Shillongani, under Assam Agricultural University (AAU), organised a ‘Seed Growers Meet’ at its office premises in Nagaon on Thursday. The event was held under the All India Co-ordinated Seed (Crops) Research Project and Vikshit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan under the Tribal Sub Plan initiative.
The programme began with a massive plantation drive around the office campus, emphasizing the need for sustainable and environment-friendly agricultural practices.
Madhuram Patiri, Director of the Assam Seed and Organic Certification Agency, graced the occasion as chief guest. In his address, he underlined the importance of producing and promoting quality seeds for the improvement of crop productivity and long-term agricultural sustainability.
Welcoming the guests and participants, Dr. Hiranya Kr. Borah, Chief Scientist of the Zonal Research Station, set the tone for the event. Dr. Mrinal Saikia, Associate Director of Research (Agriculture), interacted with the attending farmers and highlighted key issues surrounding seed quality, certification, and production challenges.
Other notable attendees included Bhabani Nath, Joint Director of Agriculture, and Nikhil Narayan Baruah, District Agriculture Officer, Nagaon, both of whom shared their perspectives on empowering farmers through access to certified seeds and better training.
The event also featured an agri-based exhibition, ceremonially inaugurated by Chief Guest Madhuram Patiri. Several NGOs and farmers’ groups participated, showcasing agricultural products, tools, and innovations.
More than 100 seed growers from across the district attended the meet. As part of the programme, seeds and agricultural tools were distributed among the participants by the officials of the research station. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Niranjan Deka, Principal Scientist of the Zonal Research Station, Shillongani, who expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their participation and contribution to the cause of sustainable agriculture.
