Massive infrastructure boost for Cachar schools by POWERGRID

SILCHAR, Aug 10: The Powergrid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID), a public sector enterprise responsible for electricity transmission, has allocated around Rs 18.3 crore to support 849 schools in Cachar district, South Assam. The financial assistance is aimed at building and repairing toilets and providing running water facilities in these schools.

The funding for this initiative has been provided under the Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan CSR scheme for the fiscal years 2022-24. The project has covered various blocks in Cachar district, including Sonai, Katigorah, Udharband, Narsingpur, Lakhipur, Raja Bazar, and Silchar-Salchapra, spanning both urban and remote locations.

During the inauguration of newly-constructed toilets at B C Memorial Academy High School in Udharband block, Cachar deputy commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha praised POWERGRID’s efforts in improving hygiene-related infrastructure in schools.

DC Jha expressed gratitude, saying, “I would like to thank POWERGRID for their generosity towards the development of the education sector’s infrastructure in Cachar district. The resources provided by POWERGRID have been utilised for over 800 schools.”

Out of a total of 2,000 schools, 40 percent of them have been covered by POWERGRID’s contribution of Rs 18.3 crore. DC Jha stated that it is now the responsibility of school authorities to effectively maintain and utilise the new infrastructure. He mentioned that approximately 90 percent of the project has been completed.

The initiative includes repairs to toilets in 764 schools and the construction of new toilets in 85 schools, along with providing water supply facilities from existing or new sources. There are also plans for the maintenance of these newly constructed facilities, with support from POWERGRID.

During the implementation of the project, POWERGRID’s deputy general manager, Supriya Paul, expressed gratitude to Cachar DC and the Education department for their cooperation. Dignitaries from POWERGRID, as well as local officials, were present at the inauguration ceremony.
