MARGHERITA, Jan 15: A traditional pig-catching competition marked its historic debut at this year’s Magh Bihu festivities in Motabil village, Makumqilla under Margherita co-district adding a unique element to the harvest festival celebrations.
The two-day event, scheduled on January 13 and 14 forms part of the broader Bohagi Utsav celebrations in Motabil Makumqilla.
The festival features cultural mainstays including the ceremonial Bhela Ghar, Meji, traditional bihu songs, dance, various sports events and cultural nights.
“Our village has always celebrated Magh Bihu, but we wanted to preserve our traditions while introducing new elements,” said Jatin Baruah, general secretary of the organising committee.
Beyond the inaugural pig-catching contest, the festival showcases traditional Bihu dance performances and folk music. Various sports activities were held, highlighting the community’s commitment to both cultural preservation and contemporary entertainment.
