JORHAT, June 17: The Minister of Finance, Women and Child Development, and Guardian Minister of Jorhat district, Ajanta Neog, on Tuesday inaugurated the newly constructed Jorhat Treasury Office building, located within the Jorhat District Commissioner’s office complex beside the AT Road.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, officials from the district administration, and staff members of the Jorhat Treasury. Speaking at the event, Minister Neog highlighted the critical need for a modern office space, stating that the earlier building was old and inadequate for such an important institution responsible for managing financial transactions and government fund releases.
Neog emphasized the vital role of treasuries in the state’s financial administration. “There are 83 treasuries in Assam, and they form the backbone of government operations by maintaining financial equilibrium at the grassroots level,” she noted. She expressed hope that the new building would offer a more efficient and comfortable environment for both staff and visitors, including pensioners who frequently access treasury services.
Touching upon the broader financial reforms initiated by the Assam government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Neog said that steps have been taken to enhance transparency in tax collection. As part of this effort, District Commissioners have been empowered and amendments made to financial and departmental rules, including in sectors like mines and minerals.
Minister Neog further added that Assam’s tax revenue has steadily increased over the past four years, enabling the government to meet salary expenditures for employees from its own resources without external borrowing. She underlined this progress as a testament to the state’s improved fiscal health and governance.
