SIVASAGAR, May 22: The Joutha Sangrami Mancha, a coalition of 12 student and youth organisations in Sivasagar district, has demanded the immediate arrest of Tanu Shahi of Duliajan, accusing her of insulting the Assamese community and using abusive language during an altercation at BN Singh Petrol Depot.
In a press conference held on Thursday, Mancha leaders expressed strong resentment over the incident, which led to the arrest of Sankarjyoti Baruah.
The organisation condemned what it termed as police excess, particularly the handcuffing of Baruah following the altercation.
Speaking to the media, Diganta Tamuly, Chitu Baruah, and Jadov Gogoi criticised the police for failing to act against Shahi despite 11 FIRs reportedly filed against her at Duliajan Police Station.
The Mancha has given the government a 72-hour deadline to arrest Shahi, warning that it will call for an Assam bandh if their demand is not met.
