GUWAHATI, June 18: Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the alleged recovery of three cow skulls near a ‘Namghar’ (prayer hall) in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Wednesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
‘In a swift and coordinated response, Lakhimpur Police have apprehended 7 individuals in connection with the recovery of 3 cattle skulls found approximately 30 meters from Siring Chuk Namghar, along the roadside’, the Chief Minister posted on ‘X’.

‘During a search at Monsur Ali’s residence, 3 additional cattle skulls were recovered and seized. Investigation is ongoing, including technical analysis,’ Sarma added.
Lakhimpur Senior Superintendent of Police Gunendra Deka told reporters that a case had been registered at Panigaon police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, read with relevant sections of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021.
He said evidence has been collected and sent for technical analysis.
‘Investigations are ongoing, and it is not possible to share all details now, but we will update as and when some progress has been made,’ he added.
He appealed to all to maintain peace and harmony in the district, and a meeting of the peace committee will be held on Thursday.
Talking to reporters on the the sidelines of a programme here, Sarma said the allegations made by Congress leaders that it is the BJP-RSS and the Hindus who are throwing the cow skulls and blaming it on the Muslims reflect the ‘poisonous mindset of Rahul Gandhi’.
‘If the BJP-RSS or Hindus were to throw any kind of meat, they would do it with pork, and it would have been at a mosque. Why would they throw a cow’s skull at temples, and what will they do with the remaining part of the cow? Is the Congress suggesting that the Hindus consume beef, and is this what Rahul Gandhi is trying to imply indirectly?’, Sarma asked.
All those accused and arrested for throwing the cows’ skulls at a ‘Namghar’ belong to a particular community, but in Assam, ‘Rahul Gandhi’s puppets are claiming that it is the Hindus, who sever the head of cows and throw it at religious places.’
‘This is one of the reasons why the Hindus hate the Congress and Rahul Gandhi,’ he added.
The Chief Minister said that such incidents have been happening recently in some places, but ‘we will deal with it firmly.”
Recently, shoot-at-sight orders during night hours were issued in Dhubri district after a cow’s head was found in front of a Hanuman temple the day after Bakrid.
The following day, another cattle skull was discovered at the same spot, accompanied by incidents of stone pelting.
On June 8, Sarma had said several cattle were allegedly slaughtered illegally at several places during Bakrid festival, and parts of the meat were thrown at multiple locations across Assam.
Police have so far arrested over 60 people, with over 50 in Dhubri alone, in connection with the illegal slaughter of cows to create communal disturbances in the state. (PTI)
