DEMOW, May 18: The body of Ponkhi Handique, daughter of Bhairab Handique and Dipika Handique and a resident of Nitaipukhuri Duwarisiga Gaon near Demow, was discovered in a rented house in Namrup on May 3. In response to this tragic incident, the All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU), Sivasagar District Committee, along with the local community, organised a National Highway blockade in Demow Chariali on May 9, demanding a thorough investigation into Ponkhi Handique’s death and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Subsequently, the All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU), Sivasagar District Committee submitted a memorandum to the state chief minister through the Executive Magistrate, Sivasagar, on May 9. A copy of the memorandum was also submitted to the DGP, Assam Police.
Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain visited the family of Ponkhi Handique in Nitaipukhuri Duwarisiga Gaon near Demow on Friday. In a post on his Facebook account, Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain stated that he promised to support the fight for justice for Ponkhi. He also mentioned that he undertook the responsibility to cover all the legal expenses required for Ponkhi Handique to receive justice.
