TEZPUR, June 14: In a bid to promote voluntary blood donation and honor the selfless contributions of blood donors, Kanaklata Civil Hospital, Tezpur, observed World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) with a series of awareness and appreciation events on Saturday.
To mark the occasion, a public rally was organized, followed by a public meeting, both of which witnessed enthusiastic participation from medical professionals, health officials, and members of various organizations from Sonitpur district.
The events were graced by several dignitaries including Additional Deputy Commissioner (Health) Twahir Alam, Joint Director of Health Services (DHS), Sonitpur Dr. Jagadish Goswami, Superintendent of Kanaklata Civil Hospital Dr. Hiranjan Saikia, Retired Joint DHS Dr. Atul Saikia, and the President and Secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Tezpur Branch — Dr. Dwipen Mahanta and Dr. Queen Gogoi, respectively. Members of various social and voluntary organizations from across the district were also present.
As part of the public meeting, a felicitation ceremony was held to recognize and appreciate the contributions of regular blood donors. Seven male and two female best voluntary blood donors affiliated with the Blood Centre of Kanaklata Civil Hospital were honored for their consistent dedication to saving lives through blood donation.
In addition, blood donation camps were simultaneously organized at the Defence Research Laboratory (DRDO), Tezpur, and 30 Assam Rifles, Lokhra, reflecting the collaborative spirit and commitment of defense personnel to the cause of voluntary blood donation.
It is worth noting that World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on June 14, was established in 2004 by four international bodies — the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations (IFBDO), and the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). The global campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe blood and blood products, while expressing gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving contributions.
World Blood Donor Day is one of the 11 official global health campaigns recognized by WHO, which also include World Health Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World AIDS Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, and others.
This year’s celebration at Kanaklata Civil Hospital served not only to honor donors but also to inspire more individuals, especially youth, to become part of the life-saving network of voluntary blood donors.
