DHUBRI, May 12: The counting of votes for the Dhubri district Panchayat elections, conducted at Bholanath College, has entered its second day, revealing a significant shift in the region’s political landscape. The BJP has emerged as a strong contender, challenging the long-held dominance of the Congress and AIUDF in this minority-dominated district.

Out of the 20 Zilla Parishad seats across five assembly constituencies, the BJP has secured notable victories, particularly in the Bilasipara and Golakganj assembly constituencies. The party won the Salkocha and Raniganj Zilla Parishad constituencies within Bilasipara, and further solidified its position by claiming the Golakganj, Gangadhar, and Agmoni-Halakura Zilla Parishad seats in Golakganj assembly.

This performance is considered “spectacular” by local political observers, especially in light of the traditional understanding that Congress and AIUDF hold significant sway over Dhubri’s voters. The recent delimitation of constituencies, which altered geographical boundaries and renamed certain areas, is also seen as a factor influencing the election outcomes.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has secured nine Zilla Parishad seats, winning in Jhagrarpar, Motirchar, Folimari, Lakhiganj, Adabari, Sindurai, Rupshi, Panbari-Rangamati and Raydak. The remaining four constituencies are witnessing tight contests between Congress, AIUDF, People’s Party, and Independent candidates, with final results awaited.

The Anchallik Panchayat member results, with 69 of 128 seats declared, reflect a diverse political distribution, Congress: 38 seats, BJP: 13 seats, AGP: 4 seats, AIUDF: 6 seats and Independents: 8 seats. Political circles are buzzing with speculation regarding the potential for the BJP to gain control of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad. This development signals a potential realignment of political power in the district, the evolving political scenario poised to significantly impact the region’s governance.
